You can count on three things from a musical based on a 1960s horror flick: a homicidal maniac, lots of dank settings and a hulking, seriously deformed guy named Bruno. You’ll get all of them in Spider Baby the Musical.
Spider Baby the Musical tells the story of the Merrye family. The three surviving members (Schwartz, Heinz, McCann) suffer from the same degenerative mental disorder, which causes the loss of impulse control. The creepy Bruno (Maze in the film’s Lon Chaney role) looks after them. Some distant relatives (Schneider and Turner) plan to institutionalize the Merrye kids and sell their land.
The music is generally grunge except for “Goodnight Daddy,†which the sisters sing softly to Desiccated Daddy with eerie xylophone accompaniment.
